Startup & EMR questions
More startup answers →What do I need to open my own medical practice?
The core list: a business entity, a practice NPI, a tax ID, state licenses and registrations, insurance credentialing, malpractice coverage, an EMR and billing setup, a location, staff, and a plan for your first patients.
How long does it take to open a medical practice?
Plan for several months. Insurance credentialing is usually the longest step, so start it first, at the same time as your entity setup and lease search.
Should I start my own practice or join a group?
Your own practice gives you control and long-term upside but carries business risk and admin work. A group is simpler but you give up control. Partnering with an MSO is a middle path: you own the practice and outsource the operations.
Should I switch EMRs?
Switch only if the problem is the software, not how it was set up. Many EMR frustrations can be fixed with better templates, training and workflows, which costs far less than a migration.
